The 2025 Gardener's Garden Tour Line Up

The 2025 Gardener's Garden Tour organized by the Niagara-on-the-Lake Horticultural Society promises to be a captivating experience for garden enthusiasts and nature lovers alike. Scheduled for July 12, 2025, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., this self-guided tour will showcase a selection of unique gardens, each reflecting the vision, dedication and passions of their homeowners, all of whom are NOTL Horticultural Society Members.
Visitors will have the opportunity to engage with homeowners who will share their gardening experiences and insights. This event not only showcases the beauty of local gardens but also supports horticultural scholarships for students at Niagara College School of Environment and Horticulture and Niagara Parks School of Horticulture. Join us for this inspiring journey through the gardens of Niagara-on-the-Lake!

An espaliered pear tree, positioned against the home’s brick chimney, has been carefully cultivated by the homeowner. Unique features of the garden include the gnarled weeping larch, several Japanese maples and an ivory silk lilac, grown from seed.
The perennial border bursts with life as each month progresses, featuring delphiniums, lilacs, roses, coreopsis, foxgloves, coneflowers, hydrangeas, and hostas, ensuring continuous blooms throughout the season. The Living Classroom: Invasive to Native
Nestled at the foot of the Niagara Escarpment, this garden is a masterful blend of beauty and ecological function. Designed by a master gardener, it showcases a vibrant array of native plants that create a lively habitat for pollinators. Visitors are greeted by an educational landscape that highlights the impact of gardening choices; contrasting invasive species like English ivy, Periwinkle, and Japanese barberry with beautiful native alternatives such as Prairie Smoke and Bearberry, or kinnikinnik as the First Nations call it.
The garden features a diverse selection of native flora, including a Tulip tree, Button bushes, New Jersey Tea, Fothergilla, Butterfly milkweed, and more. Sustainable landscaping practices are evident in the use of arborist mulch wood chips. Small bee bowls are located throughout the gardens to provide water for them.
As you explore, don’t forget to look up! Red-tailed Hawks and Bald Eagles often soar overhead, adding to the garden's wild charm. This thoughtfully curated space inspires visitors to add native plants in their own gardens, fostering beauty while supporting local ecosystems.

McFarland House - History Embraced
Step back in time at the McFarland House, one of the few surviving pre-1812 brick buildings in the Niagara region. Built in 1800, this Georgian-style home now features heritage gardens maintained by the Garden Club of Niagara.
The Heritage Gardens flank the home's entrance and showcase crops, flowers, and herbs typical of the early 1800s.
Meet knowledgeable members of McFarland House on tour day to learn about historical gardening practices and plant uses. Enjoy a glimpse into 19th-century life while strolling through these historically inspired gardens.

Celebrating the Art of Nature
The Pumphouse is situated along the picturesque banks of the Niagara River. The Niagara Pumphouse Arts Centre stands as the art hub of the community. Again this year it will serve as headquarters for our Gardener's Garden Tour.
At this stop, visitors can enjoy various attractions, including nature-inspired exhibits, outdoor Garden Gallery, and refreshments available for purchase.

Outdoor Show: Garden Gallery, an outdoor art show and sale, features decorative and functional pieces that bring artistry to gardens.

Visit the Medicinal Herb Garden at Apple Hill Apothecary and explore over 40 different medicinal herbs. Enjoy a guided or self-guided tour through our gardens and learn about the history and folklore of these plants and how they are used today in contemporary Western Herbal Medicine.
This tour will offer an exclusive look at how the history and folklore around these healing herbs overlaps with their proven medicinal qualities. There are so many examples throughout history of peoples and cultures utilizing medicinal herbs for reasons that often revolved around superstitions, but a deep dive will demonstrate that there is actually method to the madness of some of these practices.
